Homework
Aims of homework at Headington Prep
Homework should:
• provide opportunities for parents, children and the School to work together in relation to children’s
learning.
• improve the quality of the learning experience offered to children and extend it beyond the classroom
environment.
• reinforce work covered in class by providing further opportunities for each child to practise or
consolidate basic skills and knowledge, especially in English and Maths.
• encourage our children to develop the responsibility, conidence and self-discipline
needed to study independently.
EYFs homework
In EYFS, ‘home learning’ challenges are offered on a half-termly basis. These are intended to create opportunities for you and your daughter to work collaboratively on a task such as observing the number and types of birds which visit your garden, watching seasonal changes over time or increasing your knowledge and understanding of mini beasts.
Ks1 homework
Homework begins in Years 1 and 2, when reading books are taken home daily and the pupils are given spellings to learn each week. The Year 2 pupils will also have times-tables to learn and one weekend homework.
Ks2 homework
In KS2 all our homework is uploaded to the school learning platform the e-Hub: http//:ehub.headington.org It is an online system onto which all girls can logon to ind information on the homework that has been set for them. It is a centralised system for children to ind resources, instructions and deadlines for subjects for which homework is set. It also allows staff to view what other homework has been set for girls in order to better manage their workload and avoid clashes in deadlines.
Assessment
At Headington Prep, assessment is a central and essential part of learning and teaching. Informal monitoring of each pupil’s progress takes place on a daily basis.
More formal assessments, such as termly maths tests, take place at regular intervals through the year and, for Years 1 – 6, an end of year assessment week takes place in May. These results are communicated to parents in the end of year reports.
Both formal and informal assessment enables us to monitor individual progress year on year as well as inform our teaching so that it meets individual needs on a day-to-day basis.
Not only are we looking at progress year on year but we also compare the pupils’ attainment results to their potential. Where we identify gaps, we take steps to improve attainment of individuals to ensure that over time the pupils perform at their best.
