WORLD CLASS FINISH FOR ROWERS
The Women’s Eights Head of the River Race is now the largest women’s rowing race in the world with around 2,880 women racing and 320 crews taking part. It is one of the few occasions when Headington can compete against elite adult and top university crews. The event is held every year in London on the University Boat Race route and is raced as a time trial over 41⁄4 miles with the tide from Chiswick to Putney. Headington entered two Eights into the event this year and both crews had excellent races finding their rhythm
early and attacking hard on the home stretch from Hammersmith. The second boat finished an impressive 48th place which is the best ever performance by a Headington Second Eight at the Women’s Head. However, the First Eight exceeded all expectations, finishing an amazing ninth place overall. This is the highest position Headington has ever achieved and only the second time in the history of the event that a schoolgirl crew has made the top 10.
CIVIL WAR EVENT
As part of Activities Week, the History Department welcomed four sharply-dressed Civil War enthusiasts from the Sealed Knot who had arrived to deliver an exciting programme on life in England during the English Civil War.
In period dress, L4 girls tried their hand at spinning sheep’s wool and using wax candles, as well as pike and musket drill. To the beat
of a 17th century drum, the girls rose to the challenge of marching on the playing fields as a regiment made up of four units. Working cooperatively and enthusiastically, the girls learnt a great deal about life at the time of the Civil War and also had a great deal of fun.
