THE HEADINGTONIAN 2017
REVIEW OF
THE SCHOOL YEAR
WOMEN IN LITERATURE CONFERENCE
Getting our Year of Performing Arts off to a great start we had a fantastic Women in Literature Conference and welcomed 150 students from schools in the region. It began with a fascinating opening lecture on ‘Austen’s Sense and Sensibility’ from Professor Fiona Stafford from Somerville College, Oxford (pictured in the middle with some of our sixth form girls).
Four panel sessions then followed, ranging from ‘African Female Writers’, ‘Women and Gothic Fiction’ to ‘Hysterical Women with Pens’ facilitated by students from Headington, Godolphin and Latymer, St Edward’s, St Helen and St Katharine, St Mary’s, Calne and Radley. The conference was rounded off with a presentation from Dr Niall Munro from Oxford Brookes University who spoke about ’Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway’.

HOT OFF THE PRESS
L5 girls were plunged into a world of deadlines, interviews and cutting edge news as they took part in a Journalism Day as part of Activities Week.
‘Our day started with an incredible talk
from Caroline Lees, whose stories of reporting cases of modern-day slavery and going undercover with the Taliban were mindblowing! After picking her brains on
her impressive career, we were split into groups and challenged to create our own publication. We had thought it would be impossible to create a whole newspaper but it turned out the hardest part was printing it and handing it into Ms Dyer before a strict deadline - though we all got there in the end!’
