Something for everyone
Over 50 extra-curricular activities take place every week at Headington during lunchtime, before and after school. A wide choice of subjects, sports, interests and hobbies ranges from duke of Edinburgh and drama to Astronomy and run your own company and includes such diverse pastimes as debating and fencing, cheerleading and quilting.
An extensive range of clubs enhances and extends the sports curriculum. There are also numerous bands, orchestras, choirs and ensembles for musicians to join and drama clubs for our budding actors.
Most activities are free of charge, although there may be a fee where clubs are run by professional visiting coaches or involve the expense of materials and equipment. Lunchtime activities include our Enrichment Lectures, which draw together contemporary issues and age-old concerns with stories of great personal achievement and anecdotes from individuals who have achieved success in all walks of life.
Many Headington girls are actively involved in the duke of Edinburgh Award and the scheme is open to all girls from U4 and above. They learn new skills, provide volunteer services and experience adventure through physical challenge and expedition, leading to awards at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels.
Headington has a very successful Combined Cadet Force, with around 60 cadets from L5 and above in our Army detachment. Parades are once a week and evening activities include shooting on the range at Radley College. Cadets can learn orienteering and various field and military skills, joining Easter and summer camps and expeditions with other schools and colleges. The CCF also runs inexpensive courses at home and overseas, ranging from sports diving and sailing to first aid and leadership.
Success at Duke of Edinburgh or in the CCF gives girls a huge sense of personal achievement, increased confidence, leadership and teamwork as well as a greater understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses. Universities and employers take a very positive view of such achievement and what it says about an individual. At Headington we are keen to encourage participation in
extra-curricular clubs and activities as a valuable part of each girl’s personal development.
