Trips and expeditions
At Headington we believe it is important to reach beyond the confines of the School to help girls appreciate and learn more about their areas of study and to have the opportunity to put them into practice in the outside world.
Field trips and visits to working environments are a powerful supplement to the curriculum. External lectures, residential courses and visits to theatres, galleries and exhibitions give students unique insights and perspectives beyond classroom teaching.
Our scientists throughout the School can visit local research facilities and factories, as well as botanical and zoological gardens. Those in the Sixth Form who study Law and Politics visit institutions such as the Houses of Parliament, where they will see a live debate, and the law courts, where they can view legal proceedings.
Fieldwork is central to the study of Geography, from finding out how a farmer
earns a living to exploring the intrigues of the Jurassic Coast. In the Lower Sixth students venture further afield, to the Brecon Beacons and the French Alps. A small number of Sixth Formers are also invited to visit the Geography department of Oxford University every year.
Young Historians visit castles and museums as part of Key Stage 3, bringing the past to life, while A Level and IB students have an opportunity to see and learn from historic cities in Russia.
The arts and crafts provide a wealth of opportunities to see creativity on show and in action and to perform outside the School. From visiting live theatre, clothes design and food shows to touring in our music and theatre ensembles and companies, there are few who will not benefit from extending their educational experience into the wider world.
Students from U5 and L6 can take part in the nationally organised World Challenge scheme where they spend a month exploring a remote country, doing voluntary work in places generally untouched by commercial tourism. Guided and accompanied by World Challenge staff, they raise funds and plan the itinerary before embarking on this unique opportunity to experience at first hand a completely different way of life – something that they will value
for the rest of their lives.
