the power of our concentration. As for the black light, observe what our state of mind is. Sometimes we feel all dark, but we do not observe how our mind is, because we focus only on seeing the darkness. If we observe our state of mind at that moment, we would feel that it is peaceful. One more thing, if the black color light is clear, that means our mind is peaceful but not alert. If the light is blurred and dim, that means we are about to fall asleep.
Practitioner: When we meditate and we see faces of people we do not know, what does that mean? What do we do when we feel fear, arising from seeing these faces?
Phra Arjan: All images that appear while we practice vipassana or while we meditate—be it images of people, trees, buildings, people we know or do not know. These are all considered to be mental images (nimitta). What do we do when these images appear? We should contemplate the emergence, existence, and cessation of these images. What do we do when fear emerges? As soon as we feel fear, have the awareness to go in and experience that fear.
The way to resolve fear is to have the awareness and go in and really find out who fears. Do not assume that we fear. Truly knowing that we fear and thinking that we fear are totally different. Whenever we see these
