King of Glory’s history with the Youth Gathering began in
2006 when a group from KOG traveled to San Antonio,
Texas under direction of Youth Director, Allen Sasser-
Goehner. KOG traveled to New Orleans in both 2009 and
2012 for Gatherings with Youth Director, Nick Christen.
More recently, KOG youth have attended Gatherings in
Detroit (2015) and Houston (2018), as well as a special
regional gathering held in Minneapolis (2021) due to the
disruption of the COVID pandemic.
The ELCA was formed in 1987 when three Lutheran churches merged to form one denomination. The
American Lutheran Church, the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches, and the Lutheran Church in
America came together to form the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The newly formed ELCA held
it’s first Youth Gathering in 1988 in San Antonio, Texas under the theme,
“Rejoice in the Lord Always.
” Since
then, there have been ten gatherings in various large cities for the purposes of helping young people
encounter God in new ways and grow in their faith.
