A LIFE OF MUSIC
After 10 years of serving together as KOG Choir Director and Accompanist, John & Karen Haughey are retiring from these roles. The greatest gift to us, Karen said, was the chance to serve together.
John and Karen met in Mrs. Reynolds Music Theory class at the University of Montana. It was during that time when "I became enraptured by the sound a human voice can make and it just kinda clicked for how I wanted to spend my life," John says. Together, John and Karen share a calling to be the best teachers and supporters they can be. Karen put it this way: "we want to draw out God's gifts from others.”
“Music is not something with easy answers," John says, "but something happens when different people are together and music becomes a vehicle - a message of what we cannot do alone." Or said another way, Karen adds, “Music allows us to understand something you can’t understand, in a new way.”
KOG has been blessed by the artistry that John and Karen have shared. "We will miss serving together," Karen says, "It really fed me as a whole person."
BIOS
Karen Wicks Haughey grew up in a Hi-Line farming family with her parents and three brothers. John was born of James and Katherine Haughey and raised in Billings with one brother and one sister. John and Karen love to spend time with their three kids at the family cabin in Red Lodge.
In 1990, Karen began playing piano for KOG Sunday School and the Children’s Choir (called Kingdom’s Kids under the direction of Carol Ramseth). Karen and John both sang in the KOG Adult Choir. In 2000, Karen began her own business with Musikgarten and from 2000-2010, families met for classes and instruction downstairs in the Fellowship Hall. John directed Billings West Choirs from 1990-2008 and after retiring became the Director of the King of Glory Choir in 2011.
