"I never planned on moving to Montana," Matt said as I sat across from him in the Coffrin home as the sun was starting to set. "And I was sure I was never getting married again," Sarah added. As a sunbeam broke through the trees filling the room with a warm glow, Matt and Sarah looked at one another and smiled.
“It can be hard to trust God," Matt concedes, "but when you've seen the fruit God can provide, it
makes it easier to trust.”
After Sarah's first marriage ended in divorce in 2016, "I was asking big questions and was stretched thin," Sarah remembers. Working two jobs and juggling activities for her three daughters Sadie, Betsy, and June, Sarah told herself, "I just need to keep going. Maybe there is a miracle around the corner." Encouraged by the song, "All Things Work Together For Good," (based on Romans 8:28), Sarah kept praying, "show me the right way."
On an ordinary day at Billings Clinic Hospital, Matt (a dietician) happened to be introduced to Sarah (a speech therapist) and Matt remembers being speechless. “I had been through so many disappointments that I had lost hope in myself to find someone," Matt explains, noting "I've probably been on 100 first dates." Though their paths had traversed very different terrain, “I knew right away we had a different kind of connection than I’d ever had,” Sarah says. Matt was hopeful too, and had a hunch he could be a really good step-dad, so he told that to Sarah on their first date. "I freaked out," Sarah laughs, remembering how cautious and nervous she was to even go on that date. About a year later, however, after help and blessing from Sarah's daughters, Matt proposed to Sarah and they were married in their backyard in the summer of 2020. Matt and Sarah welcomed a daughter, Violet, into the family in September of 2021.
Back then, Sarah shares, "I wasn’t looking for a partner. I didn’t think what I have with Matt, even existed.” Now, as they build a life together, Matt feels "like I’m absolutely where God wants me to be. We have found a community where we can raise a daughter - especially four of them - and I'm trying to pay it forward."
