When the pandemic set in, Jim Walker was enjoying retirement after a long career in banking, but wanted to get out and do something. One day while reading the KOG E-news, he responded to Pastor Ben's call for volunteers to assist with the property. "I came out with a few other workers one day and started with pulling weeds," Jim remembers. Though the volunteer crew eventually dwindled as the weeks went by, Jim could see that there was still work to be done, so he kept showing up and at one point Roger Adam gave him his own set of keys to the garage and said, “you’re now officially a part of the maintenance crew.”
Reflecting on serving in this way, Jim says,
"In the pandemic, I really developed a
sense of pride working the [KOG] grounds
...as if it were my own lawn. After a lifetime of banking, I really enjoy working outdoors, listening to the hum of the mower. It reminds me of sitting on a baler or swather in my younger years."
When we asked Jim what small thing he did that made the biggest impact, Jim noted the removal of cigarette butts from the south lawn near the parking lot. What was the most fun? "Definitely the gopher eradication program!" Jim shepherded a group of volunteers as part of "God's Work, Our Hands" in fall. By leading others to serve around the property, Jim's small actions were multiplied and now our entire community enjoys the fruit of their labors.
