Australia...kind of
a big deal
As the old expression goes, bigger is better, right?
From Coffs Harbour’s Big Banana, to the mammoth
Big Merino that looms over Goulburn, the old
adage certainly seems to be true around Australia.
MATTHEW WAI discovers the biggest and best from
the nation’s obsession with oversized artefacts with a
few of the most interesting “big things” on Australia’s
east coast to check out on that next big road trip.
The Big Potato, NSW
It’s a bird, it’s a plane,
it’s a…potato?
Have you ever seen a landmark described
as an excreta before? Well, this may be the
first one.
You can see The Big Potato near the
Robertson Supermarket next to the
Illawarra Highway in NSW. The massive
10-metre-long structure is an ode to the
town’s mass potato production.
The infamous nickname of a ‘poo-tato’
probably has something to do with its log-
like shape and colour.
This large root vegetable was built by
Jim Mauger in 1977, who locally farmed
in the area at the time. Not too shabby,
considering it was a one-man job, you
