Fisherman's Friend:
'People cough in the same language all over the world.'
Lofthouse of Fleetwood Ltd.
Origins
In 1865 James Lofthouse, a pharmacist in Fleetwood,
England, developed a simple remedy to relieve various
respiratory problems suffered by fishermen working in
the Northern fishing grounds. It proved so popular it
became known as their "friends" resulting in the
Fisherman's Friend name. Originally, a liquid remedy
containing liquorice, menthol and eucalyptus oil and sold
by the bottle, Lofthouse later made the liquid into small
lozenges and packed them into envelopes which were
easier to transport and manage.
For the next 100 years, Fisherman’s Friend remained
unchanged and virtually unknown outside the local
fishing community of fleetwood.
