David -V- Goliath:
is this the end of
McBully?
In 2015 American
burger
giant McDonald's
brought a law suit against Ireland’s largest and fastest-
growing indigenous fast food restaurant group Supermac's
claiming the restaurant's name and menu items from its
extensive menu, such as the Mighty Mac burger, which is
similar to McDonald's signature Big Mac burger infringed on
the Big Mac trademark. In essence it argued that the
similarity between ‘Big Mac’ and Supermac's would confuse
customers.
Supermac's had previously attempted to expand operations
into the UK and Europe but was blocked when McDonald’s
won the battle over the similarity between the name
Supermac’s and Big Mac.
However, in 2017,
Supermac's
countered by
requesting that the
protections around
the words "Big Mac"
be revoked.
