electromagnetic technology). “Improving the hydraulics of

the reactor is ongoing, in order to effectively move water
through, while giving it the best dose distribution.”

One company which has been tackling operational and

maintenance costs is Atlantium, an Israeli-based enterprise
which claims it can eliminate some of the drawbacks of

traditional immersed UV systems with “out-of-the-water” UV

lamps. The company’s Hydro-Optic Disinfection (HOD)
system places the UV source outside the feedwater, thus

reducing heat-related fouling, whilst improving the

               uniformity of the light dose.

Evolving legislation will, however, have the greatest impact

going forward. In Europe, the UV market is driven by statutes

such as the European Bathing Water Directive, the Water

Framework Directive, and Integrated Pollution Prevention
               Control (IPPC).

In the US, the Environmental Protection Agency enacted the
Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule

(LT2ESWTR), a guideline to treating cryptosporidium, in 2006.

“It’s an incredible industry driver in the US, but

cryptosporidium is present all over the world,” says Dussert.

While UV still occupies a small portion of the multi-billion

dollar water treatment industry, it is growing rapidly. In

addition to regulatory incentives in developed countries,
there are vast regions of the developing world that would

benefit from both large municipal and individual scale units.

Finally, there are countless new applications that await

               exploration.
