The 2017 and the 2018 Edelman Trust Barometer (ETB)
(3) shows a broad global downturn in how the general

population trusts all four institutional groups:

• business,

• government,

• nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and

• the media.

In 2017 business trust declined from 53% to 52% with a

similar picture found in 2018. (3) Banks reside within the

business category and have contributed significantly to

the distrust felt of this category.

In the film ‘Wall Street’ Michael Douglas, playing the part

of Gordon Gekko, puts forward the idea that ‘Greed is

Good’ with the implication that greed drives business

decisions.
