Hilton Group (formerly Ladbroke) is a high roller in the
gambling and hotel game. The UK's No1 operator of
betting shops, the group offers betting on various events,
a daily lottery-style numbers game, and a soccer
telephone betting operation. Active internationally, the
company operates gaming enterprises in Europe, the
Americas, and the Middle East. The firm owns the rights
to the Hilton Hotel name outside the US and operates
more than 160 hotels in 50 countries. (The company
adopted the Hilton name in an effort to strengthen its
ties with the US hotelier.) Although its 1998 purchase of
Coral betting shops was blocked by British regulators, its
acquisition lust was satiated in 1999 when it bought
hotelier Stakis.
