ABSTRACT
The Borussia Dortmund Pipe Bomb Plot of 11 April 2016,
in Germany perpetrated by Sergei Wenergold was an
attempt to win a bet through put options. He hoped that
the bombs would result in a fall in the football club’s
share price. In effect shorting the share price. Wenergold
was charged with 28 counts of attempted murder and
ultimately sentenced to 14 years imprisonment. He tried
to blame Islamist terrorists by planting letters which
claimed they were responsible for the attack in retaliation
for German military action against Muslims of Islamic
State. Borussia Dortmund were scheduled to play their
abandoned game with Monaco in the UEFA Champions
League, the day after the bomb attack, which they lost.
Fallout from this was the sacking of Coach Thomas
Tuchel, after publicly rowing with team boss Hans-
Joachim Watzke over that decision. He said he realised
that the squad was "in a state where they were unable to
play."
