"In Europe Nissan has achieved record
growth in recent years by providing
innovative, customer-focused models
like Qashqai and Juke that are designed,
developed and produced within the
region.
Nissan already produces more vehicles
in Europe than any other Asian manufacturer and the model announced today will
bring world-class quality and leading technology to our customers at the heart of
the European C-segment.
I would also like to thank the UK Government for its strong and sustained support
which allows us to continue making significant, long-term investment in our
Sunderland operation."
The £192 million investment in the production of the new Qashqai, hatchback will
result in production of 80,000 per year when the car begins rolling off the assembly
line in 2014 adding 225 new jobs to their existing labour force and 900 more at
component suppliers. This is in addition to Nissan's announcement earlier in 2012
that its concept car the "Invitation" will be built at the Sunderland plant through an
investment of £125 million and £9.3 million from the UK Government’s Regional
Growth Fund, resulting in the production of 100,000 cars per year starting in 2013.
