The issue sparked a
row between
Belgium, the
Netherlands and
Germany, the three
countries at the
centre of the crisis,
about how long
officials knew about
the problem.
Belgium became the first country to officially notify the
EU’s food safety alert system about the presence of
tainted eggs on 20 July, followed by the Netherlands and
Germany. (9)
It emerged that Belgian officials knew about the
contamination in June, but did not make the information
public. However, Belgian Agriculture Minister Denis
Ducarme, accused the Dutch authorities of knowing
about the problem as far back as November 2016. The
food watchdog in the Netherlands denied this. (6)
