In large quantities, the insecticide is considered to be
“moderately hazardous,” according to the World
Health Organization, and can have dangerous effects
on humans’ kidneys, liver, and thyroid glands.” (5)
A spokeswoman for the European Commission said the
case was under criminal investigation by Belgian and
Dutch prosecutors and two Dutch men had been
arrested in connection with the tainted eggs scandal (9).
The two men’s company, a Dutch poultry farm cleaning
and disinfection company, Chickfriend, were suspected of
using fipronil. A second company Poultry Vision, a pest
control firm from Belgium, was alleged to have sold the
treatment to Chickfriend, (1, 9).
