History Part 2
Ending Deployability and the demise of the
SDS
• In the early 2000's, the British Commonwealth
countries decided to end deployability and
allowed DTs freedom to choose where they
wanted to work, including in the private sector.
That led to the end of the School Dental System
(SDS) and dependence on Community Health
Clinics.
• The overall participation rate of school-age
children in the public health dental program
went from 95% to about 45%.
• In India, they graduate more dentists per capita
than anywhere in the world, but the gov't
commitment to public dental clinics is
inadequate to employ them to treat the
disadvantaged. This demonstrates that desired
results don't come by just expanding
the workforce.
