Meristems or meristematic tissues consist of a

group of cells which divide constantly and

produce new cells. In both plans and animals
growth is effected by cell division and
differentiation. In animals and also in lower

plants all the cells of the body possess the power
of cell division. But in higher plants the

meristematic activity is seen located in certain
parts of the body only. Meristems are responsible

for the increase in the length of stems and roots
of higher plants, and in few cases, their increase

in thickness. Meristematic tissues are found at
the apex of the stems and roots and also leaf
primodia, vascular and cork cambium in the

           stems of dicots and gymnosperms.

According to position meristems are classified
into apical, intercalary and lateral meristems.
