North Park Elementary School will be a 65,000 square foot building replacing an existing school on
the same site in an urban north side neighborhood in Chicago. The building is designed to
accommodate a 21 Century approach to learning within the confines of a densely planned
st
urban school. Major assembly spaces are located on the ground floor with the administration,
childcare and Pre-K classrooms. A secure vestibule is pulled back from the street providing the
administration a view of a covered waiting area for children. Primary classrooms are located on
the second floor along with access to bleachers for the gym. Intermediate and Middle School
classrooms occupy the third floor along with specialty spaces for art, music and a maker space.
The fourth floor is where the library and middle school science lab/classroom are found as well as
indoor and outdoor play areas. Special attention has been paid to bring daylight into the interior
of this very urban school. The Montrose Avenue elevation provides a spectacular new image for
the school while side and rear elevations are more utilitarian.
