A Letter from the Co-chairperson
Dear friends and supporters,
My name is Maria Livieratos and I am this
year’s co-chair for the Papaflessas Apokriatiko Glendi.
As a Greek American descendant, my parents have
always immersed our family in the Greek culture. My
father is from the island of Kefalonia, and my mother
is from the Messenian region, where Papaflessas
himself is from. The reason I am so connected to this
association is because of my mother. She has been a
member of the association for over 35 years. I have
been going to the Papaflessas events ever since I was
young.
We are grateful for all the parents and youth that joined us for our annual
Glendi. It is a great pleasure for us to have you part of such an important event.
What makes these events so special is that we all have the same mission here. We
are celebrating being Greek and showing the younger generations the importance
of the Greek culture. No matter what “syllogoi” our parents have exposed us to, the
overarching story is the same. How generations before us succeeded in coming to a
foreign country and continuing their Greek heritage.
I played for Saint Constantine and Helen basketball team for many years, and
playing was such a big part of my life. My teammates, coaches, and team parents
were my second family. I have so many memories because of being on a Greek
basketball team, and I know without those experiences I would not have the Greek
community and culture instilled in my life like it is today. My mission is to have this
tradition continue on for my five children and successfully instill in them what our
parents have instilled in us.
Thank you to all of our sponsors for supporting this years’ sponsorship book,
your contribution maintains this basketball tradition for our youth. This sponsorship
book raises money for the young boys and girls basketball teams as 100% of the
profits goes to supporting the teams. This book, the teams, and the Glendi help this
tradition for our young boys and girls continue to have an Hellenic upbringing and
keep the Greek community together. Good luck to the Papaflessas teams!
Maria Livieratos
Co-chairperson of Papaflessas Apokriatiko Glendi
