By virtue of eThekwini Municipality’s ability to actively participate at various local government and international networks, the city is positioned to influence, engage and work on the development of the SDGs.
The SDGs are a natural progression and improvement of the MDGs through a more inclusive engagement process with all stakeholders but more critically that of local government. The inclusion of the local government sphere in the development of the SDGs and transitioning from the MDGs provides for an all of government and society approach to achieving sustainable development. The transition to the SDGs provides cities with an opportunity to further entrench the principles of the global agendas and the following chapter highlights the localization methodology used in eThekwini Municipality.
