Abstract
The pathways to to accounting academia in in South Africa (SA) is not prescribed to to secure tenure at at a a a a a a a a a higher education institution Accounting academia in in in in in SA is influenced by the accounting professional bodies that have a a a a a a a a a a desire to to produce highly trained accountants as opposed to to research driven accounting academics SA higher education institutions employ chartered accountants accountants and and accountants accountants holding masters’ and and doctoral degrees as lecturers in in their academic accounting departments The focus of this paper is is to to establish how accounting accounting academics pursue their pathways to accounting accounting academic academic careers The method used to to collect data were were purposive sampling Accounting academics were were selected to to be interviewed on their academic careers The observations revealed that accountants are are taking varying paths into academia where they pursue their career paths either on on on a a a a a a a a full-time basis basis part time time basis basis or on on on a a a a a a a a combination of both full time time and part time time bases depending on on their personal circumstances The findings indicate there is is is a a a a a a a a a low output of doctoral candidates among accounting academics It is is is recommended that support is is is provided to to accountants that want to to pursue a a a a a a a a a career in academia KEYWORDS: accounting academic teaching teaching experience experience teaching teaching qualification work experience experience 104 7th International Conference on on on Governance and Accountability (ICGA) 2022
