Abstract
Introduction and Purpose: The manner in which an an an academic supervises post-graduate student work has been explored by academics across many disciplines in in recent studies Academics often reflect on their their own experience of being supervised to carry out their their supervisory work However one student may have experienced different supervision styles and methods in their post-graduate studies so
it is is difficult in these cases to to adopt a a a a a a generic style or method to to develop an academic’s supervision model The supervisor-student relationship and the the significance to successfully completing the the student’s work is is crucial This reflection reflection intends to explore reflection reflection and design of a a a a suitable supervision model for students in in in the Accounting discipline and a a a a a a a design of a a a a a a a suitable supervision model which may avoid problematic issues that may arise between a a a a a a supervisor and a a a a a a student Design/methodology/approach: The epistemological influence of educational significance and how this impacts on an academics practice as a a a a a a a a supervisor will be be probed using a a a a a a a a living theory methodology via an action research paradigm Findings: The basic question of of “how do do I I improve what I I am doing?” is at at the the core of of living theory and action research research as as as the the supervisor is is an an active participant (albeit as as as a a a a a a a a a a a a novice in in the the researcher’s case) in in the the practice of supervising post-graduate students In the the Accounting discipline what makes supervision challenging and and different from other disciplines The researcher’s observations and and reflections indicates that there is currently no fixed guidelines or policies to follow Originality/value: A potentially difficult relationship between a a a a a a a supervisor and the student may be be avoided if clear guidelines and policy is adhered to at the the commencement of the the study The development of the supervisor’s post-graduate supervision capacity must be continually pursued to ensure both student and supervisor success KEYWORDS: post-graduate supervision living theory action research Book of Abstracts 109
