Status of District Disaster Management Advisory Forum
Section 51 of the Disaster Management Act, states that all the district municipalities must establish a Municipal Disaster Management Advisory Forum. Ugu District Disaster Risk Management Advisory Forum was established. It is a legislative mandate for a municipality to establish such a forum to coordinate strategic issues related to disaster management. The Forum assists in approving and/or review of the disaster management plans for the municipality before they are submitted to Council. The District Disaster Management Advisory forum was established and is functioning with meetings scheduled every 3 months or as required. All disaster management role players and leadership from local municipalities within the district form part of the forum. The main purpose of the Municipal Disaster Management Advisory Forum (MDMAF) is to ensure that the principles of co-operative governance, integrated and co-ordinated disaster risk management and external stakeholder participation at local level are applied.
