The notable overachievement
in postdoctoral fellow numbers during 2024 can be attributed
to strategic initiatives such as the Harnessing Talent (HANT) programme, which effectively attracted new researchers (postdoctoral fellows) to
DUT, and the administrative restructuring of the Growing Our Own Timber (GOOT) Fellowship Programme, which enhanced efficiency through its transfer
to the Grants Management Division. These actions reflect
a focused institutional effort to strengthen research capacity, supported by leadership commitment, improved tracking mechanisms, and an enabling environment that prioritises talent development.
To sustain and build on this momentum, DUT will prioritise the institutionalisation of successful programmes like HANT and GOOT to ensure long-term impact and alignment with ENVISION2030. Additionally, future strategies will include the development of a centralised postdoctoral management system, targeted leadership capacity-building for research managers, and strengthened inter-divisional collaboration
to streamline processes and maintain high performance across all research indicators.
