The 2024 third-stream income closed at R134 million, falling R16 million short of the R150 million target, chiefly because
of transitional refinements to our income-tracking framework. During the year, the University initiated a comprehensive review of the processes and digital systems used to identify, classify, and record third-stream revenues. While this audit has already revealed opportunities to broaden the capture of consultancy fees, commercial partnerships, and ancillary services, several receipts were conservatively deferred or re-categorised pending the finalisation of revised verification protocols.
Looking ahead, the Finance Committee has endorsed
the Third-Stream Income
Plan (2025 – 2030), and the supporting third-stream income policy is presently under
sectoral consultation, ensuring alignment with ENVISION2030 and emerging reporting requirements. These measures
– together with upgraded contract-management workflows and enhanced revenue dashboards – are expected to sharpen income recognition
and accelerate deal-conversion cycles, positioning the University to recover the shortfall and exceed future benchmarks.
Narrative Analysis & Strategic Outlook
Across the 32 DHET KPIs, the University exceeded expectations on 37.5% of indicators, met targets on 9.4%, and fell short on 53.1%. While notable progress has been made in certain areas, the proportion of unmet targets highlights critical challenges that require strategic attention.
