 MS DIPUO PETERS
Foreword from
the Minister of Energy
Fifty years is a significant turning point
in the life of any organisation. This commemorative publication vividly captures, in word and images, SAPREF’s rich history. It tells the story of the refinery’s significant events and milestones, the challenges it has faced and the talented people
who operate it. This book charts SAPREF’s growth from its construction to the giant it is today. It bears testimony to what it has taken to make SAPREF such an important motive force in the growth of South Africa’s economy.
The Ministry and the Department of Energy wishes SAPREF success in its future endeavours.
Congratulatory message from the former Minister of Energy
On behalf of the Department of Energy I would like to take this opportunity to wish team SAPREF a wonderful golden anniversary. To reach 50 years is no small feat. To reach 50 years you go through challenges, especially in an industry like petrochemicals.
So I want to say to you as team SAPREF, may God continue giving you many more years but let us understand that we are entering a very challenging environment — an environment where we talk about ensuring that what we produce at the refinery is
a chemical product that will protect the
environment, protect our people but at the same time bring the returns that you wish for. Let us continue upgrading this facility in the best interest of the people of South Africa, in the best interest of our environment, but also in the best interest of generations to come.
50 years ... Yes it is time to celebrate. Celebrate it responsibly, understanding that you have many challenges ahead of you.
And I would like to see a new emerging refinery on the shores of South Africa. Will it be SAPREF for another 50 years? I believe that you stand a chance.
Congratulations once again.
