P. 11
Message from the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal
On behalf of the people of KwaZulu-Natal, I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate SAPREF on its 50th anniversary. This is indeed a significant milestone by any measure. As the largest crude oil refinery in Southern Africa, your assets are of strategic importance both provincially and nationally. And as a province we are justifiably proud to count you among KZN’s corporate citizens.
As you celebrate your 50 years of existence, it is to be expected that some in our communities will remember the challenging relationship that you have
had with your neighbours in the past. And in remembering those challenging times, it is
our fervent wish that, together with these communities, you will find a way of reminding each other of the strides since made in improving SAPREF’s environmental record and the safety of those in the vicinity of your area of operation. This, we hope, will go further
so that much of what we see reported about SAPREF in the media is positive.
Also, as you celebrate your 50th anniversary, we hope your efforts to promote health and safety through your environmental policies will be adhered to by all staff thus
ensuring that the high standards set are complied with and the occasional spills become a thing of the past. Your major challenge now is to sustain the improvements already made.
As a major contributor to the local economy, we recognise your impact on local job creation and economic growth. This is evidenced by fact that in 2012 alone, SAPREF’s capital expenditure amounted to R233 million, while your expenditure on electricity, rates and water totalled nearly R300 million.
Your contribution to our province and our country extends far beyond keeping this country moving through refining liquid fuels, as we have discovered here in KZN. Your presence has been felt by communities through your generous investments, particularly in our schools, in various meaningful ways. As you look forward
MR SENZO MCHUNU Premier of KwaZulu-Natal
to the next 50 years, I have no doubt
that strengthening social investments in education and other community projects will feature strongly in your planning processes.
Congratulations and may you grow from strength to strength.
