Message from Shell
Congratulations to SAPREF
As the largest crude oil refinery across Southern Africa, SAPREF has processed crude into a dozen petroleum products on a daily basis for half a century.
Whether it is diesel, paraffin, bitumen, petrol, jet fuel or household chemicals, these products have kept the wheels in motion across the region.
SAPREF’s facilities are of national strategic importance. Whether it is the refinery in the South Durban Basin, the Island View storage facilities or the critically important offshore Single Buoy Mooring system where crude
oil imports are discharged — these services have reliably contributed to our economic advancement.
SAPREF has demonstrated the ability to keep up with changing times, as evidenced
by its achievement in 2005 to meet the original Clean Fuels I specifications before the scheduled deadline. SAPREF’s determination to manufacture products that are fit-for-purpose and on time will continue as we enter the next critical phase of the plant’s history. SAPREF
is preparing to supply the market with the world’s most advanced fuels with the introduction of Clean Fuels II.
Shell aspires to be the world’s most competitive and innovative energy company, and for our business in South Africa, SAPREF plays its role in our realisation of this vision.
Eight million South Africans currently have no access to electricity; not only is the country short of energy, but a stable and affordable energy supply is critical for South Africa’s continued economic growth.
Energy is a powerful enabler to help meet South Africa’s economic development ambitions. As a proud shareholder, Shell acknowledges SAPREF’s contribution thus far and we look forward to what we believe will be another 50 years of further and significant contribution to South Africa’s energy future.
