Message from the Managing Director
Celebrating 50 years of SAPREF — here’s to the future!
If age were determined by looks, the SAPREF refinery would be considered relatively young. This year marks the historic occasion of the refinery’s 50th anniversary and with the intense investment in the integrity and reliability of the plant over the years, the refinery is almost as new as it was when it was first opened in 1963.
Being Managing Director at a time when the largest crude oil refinery in Southern African celebrates its golden jubilee is indeed an honour. Turning 50 is a good enough reason to celebrate, but when in July this year the SAPREF team safely and successfully delivered the most complex Turnaround in the history of SAPREF, I knew that the time to celebrate had officially begun.
The success of the 2013 Turnaround builds on 50 years of experience, 50 years of learning,
50 years of continuous improvements. This book allows us to celebrate those 50 years of contributing to the growth of this country. It allows us to acknowledge the contributions of everyone who has ever had anything to do with SAPREF in the past, especially our staff and previous MDs.
Each refinery manager before me has witnessed a different phase of SAPREF’s growth, and I know that each one of them would be immensely proud of what SAPREF is today — a world-class operation that is making strides in safety every day.
With five decades of operating experience, we firmly believe that responsible development is critical to our long-term success. We have focused and will continue to focus on lessening our impact on the environment, on ensuring that every one of our employees and service providers goes home safely, on strengthening relationships with communities, and on making a positive contribution to our neighbours.
Our accomplishments would not have been possible but for the collective efforts of many. To our shareholders, service providers, Community Liaison Forum and various key stakeholders we say “Thank you!”
And then of course there is the heart of SAPREF — its people. Over SAPREF’s 50-year history, our people have been the foundation of our success. It is our people who deliver value to our shareholders, contribute to our business success and lay the foundation for growth.
This commemorative book is dedicated to you, Team SAPREF and your families. Here’s to you as we move to another 50 years of keeping this country moving forward.
