The business /management headcount was further increased by 5% against the 2022 target. The 22.5% over enrolment (2 539 students) needs stricter control mechanisms to be implemented at FTEN level. Over enrolment at the PG level has contributed to this positive deviation. In time, this will increase research outputs and DHET subsidies. Strategies are required to ensure that the large increase at Master’s level (MBA) have a high graduation rate.

The School of Education headcount exceeded the target by 7.3%, largely due to the introduction of newly- approved programmes, particularly the Adult and Community Education programme, and pipeline students from the 25.7% over target in 2022. This deviation will normalise as more accurate targets are set, considering the rollout of new programmes approved by CHE.

The failure to meet the enrolment target in 2023 (-14.86%) in the other humanities is attributed to several factors: the inability to meet FTEN intake goals in Eco-Tourism
in Pietermaritzburg; high dropout rates in the Faculty of Management Sciences, and a nearly 10% decrease compared to 2022 intake figures. Targeted recruitment interventions
will be implemented this year, with a specific focus on DUT feeder schools to address these challenges.

In 2023, FTE enrolment exceeded expectations by 14%, following a 12% increase reported in 2022.
This significant increase is primarily attributed to over enrolment and a large number of pipeline students, coupled with a decline in throughput rates.
