Although student support saw a 31% increase from 2023 (supporting 287 students) compared to the previous year (219 students), the overall trend over the three-year period is not optimistic, notably considering the support of R24.8 million in 2021, which aided 637 students. It is noteworthy that Master’s and doctoral students did not receive bursaries as of 2022, with awards granted only upon degree completion. Consequently, only two Master’s and six doctoral students received support in 2023, impacting PG enrolment over the past three years. Moreover, there was a 39% decrease in income from the Undergraduate Scholarship Award Scheme from 2022 to 2023, benefiting 891 students in 2022 and 510 students in 2023 (a 43% decrease). While an overall upward trend was evident in student support from 2021 to 2022 for SETAs, third-stream income, and DUT bursaries, with a 64% increase; however, there was a noticeable 31.5% decline in funding for 2023, leading to a subsequent 37.8% reduction in student support. Support from the NRF and SARAO also declined by 18.2% from 2022 to 2023 (from 170 to 139 students). In contrast, SETA support for work-integrated
learning (WIL) and graduate stipends increased by 33.7% from 2022 to 2023, but there was a slight overall decrease of 2.7% in student support.
Size and Composition of the Student
Body
This portion of the report presents an outline of the student body, detailing the quantity of enrolled students, their academic levels, and specific demographic traits. In 2023, DUT successfully attained its targeted enrolment of FTEN students following three consecutive years of falling short of the target (2020–2022). Despite setting the planned enrolment at 8,564 students, the actual enrolment exceeded expectations, reaching 8,636 students. The total student count, encompassing both FTEN and returning students, amounted to 32,561 in 2023, which represents a 1.47% increase compared to the previous year (2022), where the total enrolment stood at 32,089. This overall increase in enrolments was primarily driven by the attainment of the FTEN target for 2023.
