Race
Figure 12 demonstrates that, in 2023, all racial groups, except for Coloured, White, and Other category students, achieved the DHET target of an 80% success rate. The performance of Other category students experienced a decline from 69% in 2022 to 50% in 2023, followed by Indian (-5%) and African (-2%) students, with success rates of 81% and 82%, respectively. Coloured and White students saw decreases of 2% and 1%, respectively, compared to 2022, with success rates reaching 79% and 77%, respectively, in 2023. Coloured, White, and Other students collectively represent a small percentage of total headcount enrolments (2%). Variations in success rates by race are evident across major fields of study for 2023. African students’ performance in Business/Commerce saw a significant decrease of 6%, dropping to 82% in 2023, followed by decreases of 1% and 2% in Humanities and SET, reaching 86% and 78%, respectively, while it increased by 1% in Education (88%). White students achieved the highest success rate in Education (94%), followed by African students (88%). The most notable decline in success rate was observed for Other students in Business/Commerce, plummeting from 73% to 41%.
