 8. WATER OUTAGES AND WATER QUALITY ISSUES
Water outages and water quality issues are common on the Kwa-Dlangezwa campus due to various factors, including ageing infrastructure, operational issues, and other external factors. The high lying areas of the campus are expected to have problems with water service delivery due to the lack of water pressure.
The Incident Manager should be kept informed to determine the University’s priorities.
DISASTER CONDITIONS: OFFICE HOURS:
1) Contact the Manager: Maintenance Services and advise accordingly, who should then take the necessary action.
2) Send a message from the CRT indicating a water outage or water quality issue, the areas of the campuses that are affected, and the action that should be taken.
MAJOR (GENERAL) OUTAGE OR WATER QUALITY ISSUE:
1) Provide regular status updates via Communications at least twice daily (morning and afternoon) or more frequently when the situation is changing rapidly.
2) Send an update once the outage or water quality issue has been rectified and the situation has returned to normal.
3) Ensure arrangements are made for alternative ablution/drinking water facilities for building occupants.
MINOR (LOCAL) OUTAGE OR WATER QUALITY ISSUE:
1) Contact the Manager: Maintenance Services and advise accordingly, who should then take the necessary action.
2) Send a message to inform stakeholders of the water outage or water quality issue.
3) Send a message once the outage or water quality issue has been rectified and the situation has returned to normal.
4) Ensure arrangements are made for alternative ablution/drinking water facilities for building occupants, if required.
DISASTER CONDITIONS: AFTER HOURS:
1) Decide if wardens should be advised before daybreak in order to conserve water.
2) Instruct standby plumbers to switch over to borehole water lines where these are available.
3) Send a message indicating a water outage or water quality issue and the areas of campus that are affected.

Several backup water facilities are available on campus to provide water in the event of a municipal outage or water quality issue.
8.2. Critical Response Team Procedures
8.2.1 Protective Services Department
On receiving notification of a water outage or water quality issue, the PSD has the following responsibilities:
AFTER HOURS:
1) Upon notification, the PSD shift supervisor should immediately notify the PSD duty officer who
will notify the PSD manager to call the Manager: Maintenance Services and Operations who will in return call out standby plumbers to ascertain the nature of problem.
2) In the event of a major outage or water quality issue inform the DVC then the VC.
8.2.2. Physical Planning Operations
The Incident Manager has the following responsibilities in the event of a water outage or water quality issue:
