8.2.3 Maintenance and Operations Section
On receiving notification of a water outage or water quality issue, the Maintenance section has the following responsibilities:
DISASTER CONDITIONS – OFFICE HOURS:
1) Supervisor to dispatch plumbers to ascertain the nature of problem.
2) Plumbers to establish whether the outage or water quality issue is minor/local or major/general, and on university or municipal property.
MAJOR (GENERAL) OUTAGE OR WATER QUALITY ISSUE:
1) Once the plumbers have identified the problem as being municipal, notify Umhlathuze Municipality to attend to the situation.
2) Manager to get updates from the municipality on the status of the outage or water quality issue.
3) Manager to ascertain as soon as possible whether or not:

8.2.4 Grounds and Gardens
On receiving notification of a water outage or water quality issue, the Grounds and Gardens section has the following responsibilities:
DISASTER PREPAREDNESS:
1) Service rainwater and water tanks on a regular basis. 2) Conduct monthly checks to ensure that water tanks
have supply
DISASTER CONDITIONS – OFFICE HOURS:
1) Clarify whether Maintenance has been notified of the outage or water quality issue.
2) Prepare tractors and tankers to dispatch water to water tanks at predetermined locations.
MINOR (LOCAL) OUTAGE OR WATER QUALITY ISSUE:
1) Dispatch water as soon as possible to water tanks at predetermined locations based on the location of the outage or water quality issue.
MAJOR (GENERAL) OUTAGE OR WATER QUALITY ISSUE:
1) Dispatch water as soon as possible to water tanks at predetermined locations based on the location of the outage or water quality issue.
8.2.5 Employees (on campus) and students in Residences
The PPO has the following responsibilities in the event of a water outage or water quality issue:
DISASTER PREPAREDNESS:
1) Ensure that PPO has been notified immediately of the outage or water quality issue.
2) Housekeeping employees to check that all taps are turned off (in the event of water supply being restored).
3) In residences, wardens to communicate with sub- wardens, who communicate with residents on the status of the outage or water quality issue and the steps that have been put in place.
DISASTER CONDITIONS:
1) The Head of Student Housing or his/her appointee to communicate with the Incident Manager regarding the arrangement of alternative ablution/ drinking water facilities for building occupants, if required.
Plumbers should switch all relevant valves in buildings to borehole supply (where available).
MINOR (LOCAL) OUTAGE OR WATER QUALITY ISSUE:
1) Manager to delegate responsibilities to plumbers (office hours)/standby plumbers (after hours).
2) Manager to notify Manager: Maintenance Services and Operations or his/her appointee.
3) Manager to ascertain whether or not:
• Plumbers should switch all relevant valves
in buildings to borehole supply (where available).
DISASTER CONDITIONS: AFTER HOURS:
1) Once standby plumbers have identified the problem as being municipal, notify Umhlathuze Municipality to attend to the situation.
2) Standby plumbers to inform the Manager: Maintenance Services and Operations about the outage or water quality issue.
3) Standby plumbers to communicate with Umhlathuze Municipality about the status of the outage or water quality issue.
