14. CRITICAL INJURY
AFTER HOURS CALL PSD IMMEDIATELY! DIAL 6599
The following is offered as a general guide in the event of accidents or medical emergencies:
1) Do not put yourself at any risk whilst attending
to a casualty. Casualties who may be in confined or dangerous places, attached to live electrical equipment or in contact with noxious substances should be risk assessed and if necessary, left to the Occupational Health and Safety Office.
2) If someone is injured carry out on-the-spot first aid or get help from your nearest first aider but do not move the injured person unnecessarily. The location of qualified first aiders is given on notices found throughout the University or by calling the PSD Control Room on Ext 6599 or the OHS Office on ext. 6525.
3) All accidents requiring first aid, no matter how trivial they may seem, and incidents not involving injury i.e. near misses, must be reported to the Occupational Health and Safety Office through the relevant HOD.
4) All accidents must be reported to the Occupational Health and Safety Office.
5) Employees may also contact the health and safety representative who may investigate the occurrence on their behalf.
6) First aid boxes and notices with the names and location of persons qualified to give first aid are located throughout the University.
14.1 CRT Procedures
14.1.1 Protective Services Division
Upon receiving notification of an accident or life-threatening injury involving a university student or employee, the PSD’s
responsibilities are as follows:
1) The PSD shift supervisor should immediately notify
the PSD duty officer who should obtain relevant information such as:
I. When and where did the incident occur? II. What specifically happened? What is the
nature of the injuries?
III. Who was involved? What is their student
status?
IV. Are the local media involved and/or on scene? V. Has the next of kin or designated contact
person/s of the involved student / employee been contacted? If so, who has been contacted?
VI. Confirm if involved parties are actually university students or employees.
2) Coordinate the information disseminated to local law enforcement at the scene (if applicable).
3) The Director: PSD should contact the Incident Manager and Chair of the CRT to activate the Disaster Management and Response Network.
4) Maintain contact with the Dean of Students (w.r.t. students) or the manager/HOD (w.r.t. employees), and onsite PSD Officers.
14.1.2 Campus Health Services
In the event of receiving a university student or employee with life-threatening injuries, Campus Health Services’ responsibilities are as follows:
1) Provide first aid and other medical assistance, as
applicable.
2) Arrange for a doctor to attend to the survivor, or for
an ambulance to transport him/her to hospital for
advanced medical attention.
3) Inform the Dean of Students (w.r.t. students) or the
manager/HOD (w.r.t. employees), as necessary.
4) Contact Guidance and Counselling to support peers/
colleagues affected by the incident, where required.
14.1.3 Guidance and Counselling
Upon receiving notification of an accident or life-threatening injury involving a university employee or student, the responsibilities of Guidance and Counselling are as follows: 1) Confirm with the Dean of Students (w.r.t. students) or
the manager/HOD (w.r.t. employees) that the relevant
