14.1.4 Safety Health and Environment Office

14.2 Critical Response Team Procedures
Upon receiving notification of life-threatening injury involving a university student or employee, the Chair of the Management Team has the following responsibilities:
1) If necessary, declare an emergency or disaster and
notify all members of the Management Team.
2) Liaise with the Incident Manager to monitor the
situation and provide assistance as necessary.
3) Office of the VC to issue a statement to all UNIZULU
email users.
14.2.1 Dean of Students
Upon receiving notification of a life-threatening injury involving a university student, the Dean of Students’ responsibilities are as follows:
1) Contact the Disaster Manager, if necessary, to activate
the Disaster Management and Response Network.
2) Contact the Communications and Marketing Division.
3) Contact the Sports Director if the student was
participating in a sporting programme.
4) Contact the Student Bureau if the student is an
international student.
5) As soon as possible, initiate a debriefing session
and determine who should contact the next of kin or designated contact person/s on behalf of the University.

14.2.3 Communications and Marketing Division
Upon receiving notification of a life-threatening injury involving a university employee or student, the Director of Communications and Marketing’s responsibilities are as follows:
1) Obtain the facts from the PSD and, where applicable, the Dean of Students (w.r.t. students) or the manager/ HOD (w.r.t. employees).
2) Prepare core messages, a fact sheet, news release and briefing document where necessary.
3) Dispatch communication to internal stakeholders, the media and external stakeholders through the website if necessary.
