15. INFECTIOUS DISEASE EPIDEMIC
This section of the DMP addresses the University’s procedures upon discovering that a university employee or student has a known or suspected communicable infectious disease.

The primary aim of this plan is to provide a framework to coordinate the University’s response to any widespread infectious or notifiable disease or other biological agents and reduce the impact on health of employees and students.

15.1 Critical Response Team Procedures
15.1.1 Protective Services Department or Clinic or HRM
Upon receiving notification of a communicable infectious disease involving a university student or employee, the PSD’s responsibilities are as follows:
1) The Director: PSD should contact the ED:
Infrastructure and Chair of the CRT to activate the
CRT and Response Network.
2) Maintain contact with the Dean of Students (w.r.t.
students) or HRM or the manager / HOD (w.r.t. employees).
15.1.2 Campus Health Services
Upon diagnosing a university employee or student with a communicable infectious disease, the Campus Health Services’ responsibilities are as follows:
DISASTER PREPAREDNESS:
1) Implement infection control policies and procedures that help limit the spread of a disease on campuses
(e.g., promotion of hand hygiene, cough/sneeze
etiquette).
2) Encourage students and employees to get
appropriate vaccines, where available.
3) Procure, store and provide sufficient and accessible
infection prevention supplies (e.g., soap, alcohol- based hand hygiene products, tissues and receptacles for their disposal).
DISASTER CONDITIONS:
1) Treat the patient in an isolated room in the centre, until no longer infectious.
2) Notify the local Department of Health (Umhlathuze sub-district) and enter details in the HCC notification book.
3) Inform the Dean of Students (w.r.t. students) or the manager/HOD (w.r.t. employees), HRM as necessary.
4) Take appropriate measures to contain an epidemic outbreak as applicable and liaise with the Infection Control sister at the District or Contracted Hospital.
5) Issue campus warnings of illnesses and potential risks as applicable.
