16. VIOLENT CRIME
This section of the DMP addresses violent crimes including rape, sexual assault, date rape, and acts of brutality involving a UNIZULU student or employee.
5) Maintain contact with the Dean of Students (w.r.t. students) or the manager/HOD (w.r.t. employees), and onsite PSD Officers.
16.1.2 Campus Health Services
In the event of receiving a university student or employee who has been subjected to a violent crime, the responsibilities of the Guidance and Counselling are as follows:
1) Conduct examination of individual, as applicable.
2) Arrange for a doctor to examine the survivor and administer post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), at the University’s expense.
3) Contact Guidance and Counselling to arrange counselling sessions, as required
16.1.3 Guidance and Counselling
Upon receiving notification of a violent crime involving a university student, Guidance and Counselling’s responsibilities are as follows:
1) Contact the warden, Registrar and faculty as
necessary.
2) Set up counselling sessions as needed.
3) Initiate a debriefing session within 72 hours of
incident with students, Dean of Students.
4) Conduct a psychological examination of individual,
as applicable.
16.1.4 University Employees
Upon encountering a violent crime, affected university students or employees should carry out the following procedures. In the case of:
VIOLENT ASSAULT:
1) The survivor must go to a safe place and contact the PSD (6599) if there is immediate physical danger.
2) Seek medical assistance (Campus Health Services or private).
3) Inform the office of Dean of Students (w.r.t. students) and get advice as to whether to lay a formal criminal charge or to follow internal disciplinary procedures.
4) If necessary, contact the UNIZULU Guidance and Counselling or Warden (w.r.t. students) or Guidance and Counselling (w.r.t. employees) for advice and support.

16.1.1 Protective Services Division
Upon receiving notification of a violent crime involving a university student or employee, the PSD’s responsibilities are as follows:
1) The PSD shift supervisor should immediately notify
the PSD duty officer who should obtain relevant information such as:
I. When and where did the incident occur?
II. What specifically happened? What is the
nature of the injuries?
III. Who was involved? What is their student
status?
IV. Are the local media involved and/or on scene?
V. Has the next of kin or designated contact
person/s of the involved student / employee been contacted? If so, who has been contacted?
VI. Confirm if the parties involved are university students or employees.
VII. Are the local police involved?
2) Secure the incident area. PSD security guards to
assess the incident. Contact SHE employees as
applicable.
3) Coordinate the information disseminated to local law
enforcement at the scene (if applicable).
4) The Director: PSD should contact the Incident
Manager and Chair of the CRT to activate the Disaster Management and Response Network.
