RAPE/SEXUAL ASSAULT:
1) Employees and students should follow the UNIZULU Harassment Policy:
I. Go to a safe place. Contact the PSD if there is immediate physical danger.
II. Seek medical assistance – it is crucial that the survivor receives Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP).
III. If you do not wish to press charges you will NOT be given PEP at the hospital. In this case, you must report to UNIZULU Campus Health immediately. A doctor will be called at the University’s expense to examine you and administer PEP.
IV. Tell someone what has occurred, in as much detail as possible, since this account could corroborate evidence if a formal report is made later.
V. Call the UNIZULU Psychological Emergency number or contact your warden (w.r.t. students).
2) For support and information relating to rights, resources, reporting options:
I. Students should contact the Dean of Students’ Office, which can also assist with referrals to UNIZULU Guidance and Counselling, and with expediting student disciplinary proceedings.
II. Employees should contact the HR Division which can also assist with referrals to UNIZULU Employee Wellness, and with expediting university employees’ disciplinary proceedings.
16.2. Critical Response Team Procedures
Upon receiving notification of a violent crime involving a university student or employee, the Chair of the CRT has the following responsibilities:
1) If necessary, declare an emergency or disaster and
notify all members of the Management Team.
2) Liaise with the Incident Manager to monitor the
situation and provide assistance as necessary.
3) Liaise with the Dean of Students (w.r.t. students) or Employee Wellness (w.r.t. employees) as necessary.
4) Office of the VC (w.r.t. employees) or Dean of Students (w.r.t. students) to issue a statement to UNIZULU email users.
16.2.1 Dean of Students
Upon receiving notification of a violent crime involving a university student, the Dean of Students’ responsibilities are as follows:
1) Contact the Incident Manager and activate the
Disaster Management and Response Network.
2) Inform the Communications and Marketing Division
of the incident.
3) Issue a statement to UNIZULU email users and use
other avenues to communicate with students, while observing strict confidentiality, and obtain permission from the survivor about the wording before making any such statement.
4) Contact the HOD if extended absence is likely.
5) As soon as possible, initiate a debriefing session and
determine who should contact the family on behalf
of the University.
6) Contact Guidance and Counselling to arrange
counselling sessions, as required. 7) Maintain contact with the PSD.
16.2.2. Human Resources Division
Upon receiving notification of a violent crime involving a university employee, the HR Division’s responsibilities are as follows:
1) Contact the Incident Manager and activate the
Disaster Management and Response Network.
2) Inform the Communications and Marketing Division
of the incident.
3) Issue a statement on UNIZULU email while observing
strict confidentiality and obtain permission from the survivor about the wording before making any such statement.
4) Contact the manager/HOD.
5) As soon as possible, initiate a debriefing session and
determine who should contact the family on behalf
of the University.
6) Contact Guidance and Counselling to arrange
counselling sessions, as required.
7) Expedite university employees’ disciplinary
proceedings (where necessary)
8) Maintain direct contact with the PSD.
