17.2.2 Dean of Students
Upon receiving notification of a mental health incident involving a university student, the Dean of Students’ responsibilities are as follows:
1) Contact the Incident Manager and activate the
Disaster Management and Response Network.
2) Assess the situation to decide which university
official, if any, should go to the site or to the hospital.
3) As soon as possible, initiate a debriefing session and
determine who should contact the family on behalf
of the University.
4) Contact Campus Health Services, which will contact
Guidance and Counselling.
5) Maintain direct contact with the PSD.
6) Provide information to all students regarding the
nature of the incident and if additional security or
care is needed while on campus.
7) After assessment of level of risk, the Head of
Guidance and Counselling may request the Dean
of Students to inform the student in writing that he/she is required to withdraw from university for an extended period (usually six months) to seek appropriate treatment.
17.2.3 Communications and Marketing Division
Upon receiving notification of a mental health incident involving a university student or employee, the Communications and Marketing Division’s responsibilities are as follows:
1) Obtain the facts from the PSD and, where applicable, the Dean of Students (w.r.t. students) or the manager/ HOD (w.r.t. employees).
2) Prepare core messages, a fact sheet, news release and briefing document where necessary.
3) Dispatch communication to internal stakeholders, the media and external stakeholders through the website if necessary.
