FACULTY OF ENGINEERING and THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT
The Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment lived up to its mission in 2024 to develop “professionals in engineering, design, and infrastructure for transformed societies”. The faculty actively strives to implement the most innovative and modern teaching methods, including all upgrades to e-learning and educational online services, which foster critical and creative thinking in students and graduates.
       We celebrate some milestones of 2024 of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment.
FEBE students represented the faculty at the Winter University of Engineering Studies – New Scientific Horizons in Russia.The Winter University aims to improve international collaboration and foster stronger relationships among young engineers. More than 1000 students applied for participation in the Winter University, among which 220 students from Russia, Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and non-CIS countries were selected, representing foreign universities of the Republic of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Tajikistan, China, South Africa, Iran and India, as well as 50 Russian students from Moscow and Moscow region, St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod region, Karelia, Khabarovsk region, Kaliningrad region, Irkutsk region, Novosibirsk region, Astrakhan region and Samara region.
The main directions of the Winter University for Engineering Sciences were to Digital technologies in engineering activities, system digital engineering, digital twin technologies, and artificial intelligence technologies.
Strategic Planning and Team Building Programme
The EXCO members and supporting structures of the FEBE participated in a four-day Strategic Planning and Team Building Programme, where the 2024 Operational Plan was reviewed, and goals for 2025 were set to align with the faculty’s long-term vision.
RoboGirl Programme
Staff members and postgraduate students
from the Department of Electronic and
Computer Engineering, in partnership with
Lenovo and Toyota South Africa Motors,
played a supervisory role for several groups participating in the RoboGirl programme. The RoboGirl programme is an annual event that introduces girls to science and technology concepts.
The program’s goals include:
• Providing young women with resources to pursue careers in technology
• Addressing South Africa’s skills shortage in critical sectors
• Nurturing the next generation of innovators
• Fostering a diverse and skilled future workforce
The programme includes hands-on training in coding, robotics, and IoT technologies.Winners of the competition receive prizes, mentorship, and opportunities for further development.
