CATCHING UP WITH RETIREE BOB SHUMWAY
When did you hire and retire from the BWL; from what positions; and with how many years of service?
I hired at the BWL in 1960 as a Drafter and retired in 1994 as the Manager of Water Distribution and Dye Water Conditioning Plant with 34 years of service.
Have you lived in Michigan during your whole retirement or are you a Snowbird going somewhere warm in the winter?
We have lived in Michigan during my entire retirement. We initially moved from
Grand Ledge to Derby Lake in Stanton, Michigan, and then
in 1999 we moved to Cadillac to be near family. We did do the snowbird thing for 18 years spending 13 winters in Florida and 5 in Arizona.
What have you been up to since you retired?
I have enjoyed playing lots of golf during my retirement and have been part of a volunteer service group at the Cadillac Country Club. I also enjoy going out fishing in Grand Traverse Bay with my son. My wife, Marcia, and I serve on various committees at the Elks Club, and we are both avid bridge players.
Travels?
Our travels have included several cruises, visiting Alaska, the Panama Canal, and the Bahamas. We also celebrated
our 40th wedding anniversary with a trip to Hawaii.
Kids or Grandkids you'd like to brag about?
Marcia and I have been
married almost 62 years. We have a daughter and a son living in Cadillac and Traverse City, 3 wonderful grandkids, and 3 great grandsons. With everyone living so close, we are able to get together a lot.
Any other BWL retirees you keep in touch with?
I do keep in touch with Dave Shaw, and by Facebook with Chris Throgmartin. We also come down to Lansing for the BWL 25 Year Club dinners held at Hawk Hollow where we enjoy catching up with many retirees.
Anything else you'd like to share?
I was very fortunate to spend my career at the Board of Water & Light. The people there were great to work with.
