DECADE: 1990s
Digital Divide 94: The Last Kimono
The 1990's kicked me screaming into the Digital World. In 1994, I joined the Computer
Science faculty at Trinity University and my studio practice was shattered by the new
reality of binary concepts and digitally generated imagery. I left behind the large-scale
paper kimonos that had been my long-time signature work and lost my footing in
cyberspace. It took another ten years before I found my way back to clay, paper,
beeswax, and fiber, my instinctive, beloved media. This work is constructed of canvas
from my old studio, torn,
and imprinted with
computer code. The 90's
decade of immersion in
technology and the
digital binary world
continues to serve and
influence me like a gift of
fire - brilliant,
indispensable and risky.
