BEADS OF CHANGE
Beads of Change is my response to the 50-foot
statue of Dignity, an indigenous woman with a
star quilt, built in stainless steel, lit at night by
LED lights. She stands on a bluff overlooking the
Missouri River near Chamberlain, South Dakota.
Beads of Change has an airy, spatial feeling,
capturing freedom once felt by the area’s indige-
nous people. Added beads symbolize indigenous
women’s work and beads traded for other goods
where native people lost everything.
The collage also reflects changes in my work
where beads, polished geodes, and stitching en-
hance stories and reflect my emotions as I piece
them together.
