        Valley Shore Acappella Chorus

What can you say about Competition Week-end
that hasn’t been said? A chorus works for months
on two songs. We practiced blending our parts
through quartet drills, working and reworking
difficult transitions and vowel matching. We rid
ourselves of bad habits like scooping. We do all
this for 6 minutes on the Regional Stage at
Symphony Hall! Some may say barber shoppers
are obsessed. That might be true, but I doubt any
of us would voluntarily stop singing!

This year VSA started on Friday watching a
spectacular Quartet Competition. We arrived in
time to cheer the mic-testers, Voce. It was a stellar
performance. They sang “When I Fall in Love”
and “Look at Me Now.” Goosebumps! We’re
especially proud to have Voce’s Baritone as VSA’s
director. Angie Clark has taught our group that
improvement is possible at any age if you’re
willing to put in the effort. Angie also lends her
vocal talents to Millenium Magic. This group of
women is an inspiration to all small choruses.
When they take the stage, you know you are in for
some incredible sounds. “Foolish Heart” was
        performed with heart rending emotion

                              st
It was no surprise that 1 place Division A Small
Chorus was theirs to take home. Our youngest and oldest member
. Heidi Petersen and Jeannette Fudge

Back to the Quartet Contest, those who heard
Saffron’s performance on Friday, were brought to
tears by the depth of feeling in their music. They
                                                                              st
truly deserved their 1 place finish. While we
applaud all the winners, we also appreciate all the
other quartets who also competed. VSA has a soft
spot for Four Fun. Their bass, Ann Marie Jantsch
and tenor, Carole’ Mensing are former VSA
members. We were pleased to have them perform
at our Christmas Show and always cheer them on!
We also are particularly proud of our
“homegrown” quartet, Quattro. VSA has watched
them grow in confidence and musical prowess. All
in all, Region 1 Quartet Competition was a night to
Sue Wilber, Heidi Petersen and Wendy Petersen remember. (continued on next page)
